Luca Cumani’s Havana Cooler has beaten over 30 entries in Saturday’s Bet365 Bet365 sponsored Old Newton Cup to be made 5-1 favourite for the race. A win at Haydock would give the trainer his fourth victory in the race in 11 years.

Havana Cooler, whose last outing was in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot, features among 33 entries for the Old Newton Cup, which also includes Magic Hurricane (7-1) and Al Saham (8-1). The four year-old colt will be hoping to improve on his last three finishes which all resulted in third place.

Pat Cooney from the sponsors said: “Luca Cumani has done well in the bet365 Old Newton Cup in recent years, so it’s no surprise his Havana Cooler is our 5-1 favourite.

“He made a promising seasonal reappearance at Royal Ascot behind the heavily backed Arab Spring, and Saturday’s race looks ideal for him.

“It’s always a very competitive race though, and we expect to see money for plenty of runners.”

Other notable entries in the race include Salutation (10-1), Dashing Star (12-1), and Saved By The Bell (14-1). A notable amount of the 33 current entries will likely be cut before Saturday so get your bets in while the prices are low at bet365.

The other notable race on Saturday at Haydock is the Group 2 bet365 Lancashire Oaks. The Sponsors have made Seal Of Approval, who is trained by James Fanshawe, 4-1 favourite for the 1m3f contest.

Two of the five year-old filly’s biggest rivals could be the two Ralph Beckett-trained runners, Talent and Secret Gesture (who are 5-1 and 8-1 respectively), but their involvement in the race will depend entirely on the ground.

“Talent and Secret Gesture are both possible runners in the bet365 Lancashire Oaks. We will see how we go and it will depend on the ground and weather,” Beckett said.

“Secret Gesture came out of her race at Nottingham in good shape. She had to go through a tight gap that day and there wasn’t much room, but she came out of it like a cork from a bottle – she shot through it.

“I am happy with her and the race on Saturday looks like an obvious target. I don’t think the step back up to 12 furlongs will be a problem. She got it well at Epsom and in the Yorkshire Oaks last year.”

Beckett continued: “I think Talent has come on for her run at Epsom. She will need to, but I think she has and I wasn’t entirely happy with the way our horses were running when she ran there.

“We went into a bit of a lull, as happens to all of us, but they are running better now and hopefully that will come to pass if she runs at the weekend.”
